Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specific massage therapy technique aimed essentially at activating the manual lymphatic system to improve the elimination of interstitial fluid. This technique does not only work on the lymphatic system but the return circulation as a whole.
In addition, it is applied in cases of venous and/or lymphatic pathology, tired legs, leg edema, lymphedema, some inflammatory processes, fluid retention, post-surgery in general (operations in traumatology, arthroscopies, tummy tucks, liposuction, mastectomies … ).
Surgeons recommend performing several sessions of lymphatic drainage after any aesthetic intervention, due to the consequences that occur in the tissues and the body in general, all intending to accelerate the recovery processes, improve oxygenation, and contribute nutrients to the area and obtain the best results.
Procedimiento
At Avanestetic Clinic we perform Manual Lymphatic Drainage in conjunction with the application of ultrasound, Ultrasound is a device that transfers mechanical waves of higher frequency than sound, through a physical medium (gel), which allows it to propagate and transmit energy (deep heat) thanks to the vibration produced by these waves. With vibration, cellular movement is produced that improves healing. In general, its application lasts from 2 to 6 minutes and only during the first physiotherapy sessions; This is because ultrasound aims to support the first stages of the healing process: inflammation.
The frequency is very directly related to the operation of ultrasound and the absorption capacity of the tissues according to the modalities used, these frequencies range from 0.5 to 1 MHz to treat deep structures and the highest frequencies, from 2 to 3 MHz, to treat skin and subcutaneous tissue.
Beneficios
- It improves lymphatic circulation which helps to speed up recovery, reduce pain and inflammation.
- Improve tissue healing and eliminate post-surgical edema.
- It is an excellent technique to avoid subcutaneous fibrosis.
- Moisturizes the skin and helps reduce bruising.
Cuidado y recomendaciones
In general, the sessions will last 30-40 minutes. Although it is not necessary to perform daily sessions, it is highly recommended to receive them every other day for a week, so that at least 3 or 4 massages are applied during the postoperative period. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to carry out more sessions or to space them more in time. This must be determined by medical personnel.
